The TOP Halloween Books & Crafts for Preschoolers

Halloween is a fun season, but all the witches, ghouls, and monsters sometimes make it feel too spooky for little minds. Choosing silly, age-appropriate Halloween books and crafts will keep your preschoolers entertained, and the scaries will be long gone!🎃👻

Why use crafts with books

The benefits of using crafts with books are endless! Hands-on activities help create a long-lasting literacy connection for students as they make connections to words read.

Craftivities are also a great way to work on fine motor and spatial awareness skills as they work to put little pieces together.

Other benefits of using books and crafts include:

  • Social skills: sharing and cooperation with others
  • Problem solving skills: making decisions about how to construct the activity
  • Self-regulation skills: develop patience while waiting for turns and flexibility when crafts don’t turn out the way intended
  • Self-esteem: pride and accomplishment as they complete tasks and grow in creativity

There are so many cute Halloween themed books to choose from, but these are my absolute favorites:

  1. The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano
  2. 10 Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell
  3. Pumpkin Feelings by Elizabeth Curtis

Spookley the Square Pumpkin

About the book

Spookley is teased by other pumpkins because he is square-shaped instead of round. Spookley has to work hard to do things the other pumpkins can do easily, but the farmer sees the importance of Spookley’s differences and celebrates him for it.

This Pumpkins Shapes Activity Pack is the perfect companion to use with Spookley the Square Pumpkin while targeting math skills. Prep is easy with this activity; each page of the craft is labeled with the number of sets and construction paper needed, so you just print and go.

Little learners practice shapes while they work on fine motor skills as they cut, glue, and color. Even with the same directions, each student’s pumpkin ends up differently. Creativity skills are in full bloom with this craft!

Promote classroom community by highlighting and celebrating the differences of each of your students (just like Spookley!).

10 Timid Ghosts

About the book

A witch moves into a haunted house where 10 timid ghosts already live, and she wants them to leave. She uses different Halloween costumes to scare the ghosts away one-by-one until only one of the ghosts is left.

These ghost activities provide an interactive way to practice math, fine motor, and spatial awareness skills with number identification, one-to-one counting, cutting, gluing, matching, and coloring.

Use this in large group learning or in preschool centers.

Pumpkin Feelings

About the book

This book follows along with a child who recognizes the different sizes, colors, and facial expressions of many pumpkins. The child highlights and imitates many common emotions. Each page provides an opportunity for readers to model the feelings and reflect on when they have felt the same way.
